Sintered Cobalt Samarium

Samarium Cobalt Magnets (SmCo)

Samarium Cobalt magnets were the first rare earth magnets to be commercially available. Their magnetic properties are comparable to those of Neodymium Iron Boron (NdFeB) magnets, although slightly lower. They have never achieved the same commercial success as NdFeB magnets, mainly due to the high cost of Cobalt and its strategic importance.
As a rare earth magnet, SmCo is an intermetallic compound composed of the rare earth element Samarium and the transition metal Cobalt.
The manufacturing process begins with milling and pressing, followed by sintering in an inert atmosphere. The magnets can be produced through isostatic pressing in oil-bath systems or dry pressing processes, with either axial or diametrical orientation.
The magnets are then machined using diamond grinding tools to achieve the required shapes and dimensions.

Magnetic properties of sintered samarium cobalt magnets

SmCo magnets offer very interesting magnetic performance, with $B_r$ up to approximately 1 Tesla and an energy product of up to $240\text{ kJ/m}^3$. SmCo is produced in two different varieties, $\text{Sm}_2\text{Co}_{17}$ and $\text{Sm}_1\text{Co}_5$, each featuring a different magnetic behavior: nucleation for the former and “pinning” for the latter. $\text{Sm}_2\text{Co}_{17}$ shows the highest performance but, conversely, requires a significantly higher magnetization field compared to $\text{Sm}_1\text{Co}_5$: $4000\text{ kA/m}$ versus $2000\text{ kA/m}$.
SmCo offers two significant advantages over NdFeB: corrosion resistance and excellent thermal behavior. The Curie temperature is around $700\text{ °C}$ for $\text{Sm}_1\text{Co}_5$ and $800\text{ °C}$ for $\text{Sm}_2\text{Co}_{17}$; furthermore, its magnetic properties degrade slowly as the temperature rises. SmCo magnets are highly valued in the aerospace and electromedical sectors: generally, they should be preferred to neodymium magnets when thermal or oxidation issues occur in the device. Industrial and scientific applications are similar to those of NdFeB: sensors, loudspeakers, electric motors, measuring instruments, and switches.

Applications of sintered samarium cobalt magnets

Samarium Cobalt magnets are highly valued in the aerospace and electromedical sectors and, in general, should be preferred when thermal or oxidation issues occur within the device. Industrial and scientific applications are similar to those of NdFeB, including:
