FERRIMAX ferrite magnets

Sintered Ferrite Magnets

Sintered ferrite magnets

The first developments of ferrite magnets date back to the 1940s, while their commercial production began in the 1950s.
Ferrite magnets are manufactured from iron oxide and barium or strontium carbonate.
The raw materials are mixed, milled, and then heat-treated through a calcination process to obtain the hexaferrite phase (SrFe₁₂O₁₉ or BaFe₁₂O₁₉). The resulting material is then further milled to achieve a finer powder.
The pressing process, which can also be carried out in a dry state, can be performed either in the presence of a magnetic field or without a magnetic field. This distinction is crucial, as the first method produces anisotropic material, while the second results in isotropic magnets

Magnetic Properties of Ferrite Magnets

The main innovation introduced by hard ferrite magnets, compared to their predecessors (Alnico magnets), was not their remanence (Br) or energy product (BH), but rather their reversible behavior in the second quadrant of the hysteresis loop, where magnets typically operate and deliver energy (the BH product is negative).

Having a “reversible” behavior in this area means that ferrite magnets can be demagnetized and re-magnetized without losing their magnetic properties. This explains the great success and the wide range of applications developed by hard ferrites since the 1950s, when they were first introduced into a market previously dominated by Alnico magnets.

Another important characteristic of hard ferrites is their excellent water resistance, as they are materials derived directly from oxides. Their thermal behavior is also quite unique compared to other magnet materials: their coercive force tends to increase with rising temperature up to approximately 180°C, unlike other magnetic materials where Hc continuously decreases as temperature increases.
